Overview

Bike4Good is an initiative by Migros Bank designed to promote health and social engagement as part of the "Bike to work" challenge. Employees who cycle to work collectively raise donations—calculated per kilometer cycled—for non-profit organizations dedicated to social and environmental causes.

The non-profit organization we are supporting this year: Velafrica

Velafrica refurbishes bicycles that are no longer in use in Switzerland and strengthens cycling ecosystems in Africa. Working together with local partner organizations, they establish local bicycle workshops, create training opportunities for young people, and launch mobility initiatives that generate lasting impact. In this way, Velafrica makes a sustainable contribution—for, as the organization itself emphasizes:

"Bicycles are more than just a means of transport: they provide access to education and professional opportunities, and make a vital contribution to environmental and climate protection. By strengthening local structures, we create solutions that provide long-term support to people right where they live."

The donations raised through Bike4Good—which are matched by the bank—will go directly toward the "Bike2School" project in Tanzania this year. A particular focus is placed on the so-called "Flying Mechanics": the donations are specifically directed toward these young mobile mechanics, who regularly maintain and repair the school bicycles. This ensures that the bikes remain in service for the long term and can continue to deliver their positive impact sustainably.

Nonprofit we are supporting this year

Using bikes to make a difference. The combination of integration work in Switzerland and development cooperation in Africa makes Velafrica unique. Since 1993, we have been collecting discarded bicycles, refurbishing them in social facilities, and exporting them to partner organizations in Africa. In 2021 alone, with the help of 35 partner workshops in Switzerland, we loaded 54 containers with 24,600 functional bicycles destined for Africa.
